Likewise, the values and fervent Bulldog spirit of the small agricultural school that opened its doors in Goodman 90 years ago have stood the test of time and still remain today. The State Department of Education hereby approves your school for full credits of the freshman college work for the session of 1925-26." - W.F Bond, State Superintendent of Education. M.E Morehead Having M.E Morehead as superintendent of Holmes Junior College in Goodman in 1925, Holmes was able to start its journey to becoming the excellent college it is today. Unlike today, the campus started with only three main buildings: the administrative building, the girl's dormitory, and the boy's dormitory. All three were modernly built with steam heat, electric lights, running water, and screening. In 1925, Holmes was given access to farm acres that were furnished and included an effective lab for teaching crops and grazing. The farm provided the school with not only educational resources, but also with milk for the students. After Holmes' quick success, Morehead soon began plans to expand the community college into a two-year college. He was able to achieve his goal with a $12,659.50 loan given by the Board of Trustees. On May 24, 1928, members from the Mississippi Junior College Accrediting Commission visited Holmes and offered recommendations for improvement such as: the addition of more science M.C. McDaniel equipment, new roofs, steam heat in the boy's dorm, construction of a gymnasium, and the cooperation of other counties in support of the school. By June 1, 1928, M.E. Morehead was succeeded by M.C. McDaniel as the new superintendent of Holmes. During McDaniel's first year in leadership, Holmes was able to make repairs, build a gymnasium, and introduce the first school newspaper and yearbook that we still know today as The Growl and Horizons, respectively. Three months later in September of 1929, the school underwent more improvements as they added new dormitories for the students, added 2300 volumes to their library, and formed a school band led by Professor Leonard from Millsaps College. 5 16-01-06 17:43:50 y609050_0005_c.p1.pdf ODjob6090500|Size648wX864h|page6|FourColor|UV:No|Submittedon:01/06/201600:00AMUTC|Generatedon:01/06/201623:53PMUTC|PDFG3v3.1.0.2|RequestID:e9ec71f7-0b15-4b6d-9347-2dd274ce4298|SpreadID:EWHDJP8bB7S0EZ8y8G1Ji8ci|Type:Submit|HolmesCommunityCollege Fontsused:AWPCAliceBold,AWPCBaskervilleBold,AWPCBaskervilleBoldItalic,AWPCTimes Colorsused:Black,F0201,White PDC:https://sto.walsworthyearbooks.com.s3.amazonaws.com/pdf/Manufacturing/e9ec71f7-0b15-4b6d-9347-2dd274ce4298/EWHDJP8bB7S0EZ8y8G1Ji8ci.pdc 1935-1945 The Holmes football stadium was built in 1936 in honor of the coach, Ras M. Branch. Branch ended up taking over as president in 1940 following McDaniel's resignation. During his tenure, the college continued to grow at a rapid pace and he made certain that the physical plant and course offerings expanded accordingly. Student activities were expanded and now Ras M. Branch included athletics, the marching band, the Glee Club, a debate team, a drama club, the International Relations Club, religious organizations, and the two student publications that exist today: The Growl student newspaper and the yearbook. The yearbook changed its name from The Cornerstone to Horizons in 1941. In 1939, school dances were allowed to be held on campus for the ffiirrsstt ttiimmee.. AAllssoo dduurriinngg tthhiiss ttiimmee,, in appreciation for McDaniel's dedication to Holmes, the administration building was named for him. Other buildings built during this period included an annex to the girl's dorm, the band hall, a canning plant and a laundry mat. The Goodman Grammar School was purchased, as well, and renovated into a boy's dorm. In 1942, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools evaluated both the high school and the college and found both to be in excellent condition.
