It has been a pleasure acting as consultant editor on this project as it h as allowed me to broaden and deepen my knowledge of alternative medicine. My own interest in complementary therapies was incited by my parents' use of home remedies. Our home pharmacopoeia was replete with apple cider vinegar, fish oil, vitamins and minerals, ginger, and a broad variety of other herbal and nutritional prescriptions. All of these were administered with confidence and traditional ritual. Working on 1000 Cures, I f eel as though I h ave come full circle in my connection with medicine — from home remedies to medical school, to practice, to academia, and now back to home remedies with this book. 1000 Cures is an ambitious work that offers the reader a broad perspective on over 200 very common medical conditions. Experts in the fields of conventional western medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, naturopathy, homeopathy, and herbal medicine have each contributed sections on how to treat a plenitude of acute conditions, from hangovers to strep throat, colic, earaches, fevers, and many more. The book also suggests holistic, natural treatments for some chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and asthma. 7000 Cures has the potential to decrease the cost of your family's health care by making office or emergency room visits to treat minor conditions unnecessary and by minimizing the need for expensive prescription medications when simpler treatment measures will suffice. However, it is important to recognize the limits of self-diagnosis and self-prescribing. 7000 Cures always advises the reader when consultation with an expert is necessary, when medication is likely to be more helpful than homeopathic, herbal, or nutritional approaches, and when a problem clearly requires emergency evaluation and treatment. 7000 Cures is not a substitute for standard medical care and cannot replace an evaluation by a trained professional. Readers must heed the warnings included in each section to protect their own and their families' health. With this caveat in mind, 7000 Cures will be a rich treasury of health information for readers.
